Getting Healthy #3 – Physically

Easter is ALMOST here!  On April 8th we launch into a new series Live Differently focusing on 4 areas of health:  spiritual, financial, physical and family.

Did you know that more people will die from heart disease this year than any other cause? Why? We eat a lot of junk! The truth of the matter is most of us treat our bodies like a human dumping ground as opposed to a temple of the Holy Spirit. We “calorie up” with sugar saturated drinks, eat way to much fast food, and exercise for some of us consists of going for a run…from the couch to the refrigerator. This is not God’s best for us. God cares about our bodies and he wants us to take care of what He has given to us. Tired of those extra few pounds you are carrying around?  Sick of low energy days and unhealthy habits?  Do you have high cholesterol or high blood pressure?  As Easter is just a few short days away, I want to take time to introduce you to another key area of health we will be tackling through the “Live Differently” series.  It’s about transformation against the odds.

What does Physical health look like?

“whoever loves discipline loves knowledge…” (Proverbs 12:1 ESV)

Most of us eat what we want, when we want and we use the argument, “it’s my body, so I will do what I want with it.” This is not true, it’s a lie from the culture.  It’s not your body, your body belongs to God and he desires for you to use it to glorify Him.  Discipline can create a marvelous dependance on God as long as your motivations are correct.  but most of us struggle with the nasty ‘D’ word, DISCIPLINE. Here are a few things that helped me as I have started new habits and increased my own discipline factor.

  • Don’t Compare – Nothing will discourage you more if you try and compare yourself to other people.  Some people are gifted to be vegans.  Some people are genetically predisposed to be thin.  Stop worrying about everyone else and what the magazine adds tell you to be and seek God for his plan for your health and nutrition.  What worked for someone else may not necessarily work for you.  Seek God!
  • Take it Slow- One mistake we usually make is we pull the plug and make drastic changes all at once.  Then we fail miserably and pile on the guilt later and claim, “we tried.”  Unfortunately, most of us want instant results and instant gratification.  It didn’t take you a week to gain that extra fifty pounds or have high blood pressure so it is going to take more than a week to remedy the problem.
  • You Need A Buddy – Seriously, don’t even try and change a major habit on your own.  You need the support and accountability of a friend who will let you succeed and sometimes fail without piling on the guilt.  You need someone who you can model your health after and someone who will celebrate with you.  Isolation = failure.

Treating our bodies well is not an option, its a requirement of those who want to follow Jesus!  The big target on the wall is writing a LIFE TRANSFORMATION VISION for your Physical Health.  We will be doing this in our small groups starting the week of Easter.  Write the God inspired vision He gave you then make it happen!

I urge you therefore brothers in view of God’s mercy to present your bodies a living sacrifice, this is your spiritual act of worship.”        Romans 12:1-2

How can you live more healthy spiritually, financially, physically and in your family?  I believe is starts with a heart change and then a commitment to a 217group.  You will grow more in a group than you will on your own. (Ecclesiastes 4:12)  These next 50 days of Live Differently at 217church will be life changing!  join a 217group today! How will you make the most of each Life Transformation Vision?

We can do this, together!  Josh

Getting Healthy #2 – Financially

Who wouldn’t want to live debt free, have the ability to provide for basic needs, be an extravagant giver and understand the power of saving?  Not many people I know would say, ‘I want to live with a mountain of debt.’   Yet the average household lives with $8,000 in debt, saves less than 1% of income and gives away less than 3%!  What is wrong with us? As we enter into the Easter season in two weeks, I want to take time to introduce you to four key areas of health we will be tackling through the Live Differently series.  It’s about transformation against the odds.

What does financial health look like?

“But godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6 ESV)

I am in the process of gathering all my financial records for 2011 and completing my taxes.  Have you gone there yet? My taxes are complicated so I hire someone to assemble them and complete them for me.  At the end of the process, she gives me the report and I pour over it.  It is a great opportunity to reflect on God’s blessings.  I review the year and see how much I owe.  I see how much I paid in interest on my house and how much I gave.  It’s all there and I use tax time to do a heart check on what I value.  I review the year and how I spent all the money that was entrusted to me.  Am I content with what God gave to me to manage? Taxes are very revealing, the numbers don’t lie!   So what is our responsibility when it comes to money?  Here are a few principles to get you started…

Know what you OWE – This is a non-negotiable!  If you are in denial about what you owe, you will never be able to go forward on solid ground with a plan to get out of debt.  It may be discouraging, but you can either pay now or pay later.  Keep this verse in mind and let it motivate you as you gather your records. “The rich rules over the poor and the borrower is slave to the lender” (Proverbs 22:7 ESV)

Know what you OWN- Do you own cars, jewelry, antiques, a house, any retirement funds? To go forward you need to know what you own.  This will help you to understand what you might need to sell in order to get out of debt.

Know where it is GOING- You must get on a budget!  A budget is just planned spending, it’s a God-inspired plan of how he wants you to spend money.  Do you ask God where you should give, save and spend?  The monthly inflow and out-flow of how you spend money IS A SPIRITUAL ISSUE.

Financial health is not an option, its a requirement of those who want to follow Jesus!  The big target on the wall is writing a LIFE TRANSFORMATION VISION for your Financial Health

28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that (A)we may present everyone (B)mature in Christ. 29 For this (C)I toil, (D)struggling (E)with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.  Colossians 1:28-29

Getting Healthy – Spiritually

Do you want to be healthy?  Yes, of course!  It’s a no brainer.  As a matter of fact, The question is not whether or not we want to be healthy, but will we make the tough choices in order to be healthy.  As we enter into the Easter season in a few short weeks, I want to take time to introduce you to four key areas of health we will be tackling through the Live Differently series.

What does spiritual health look like?

“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Mark 2:17 NIV)

Going to Dr. Isn’t fun.  As a matter of fact I avoid him at all costs.  But it is something I need to do from time to time.  During this series we will introduce the concept of a Life Transformation Vision. (LTV)  Writing and implementing a LTV will be like a prescription for health God writes for us.  In each area of health focus you will have the opportunity to listen to God and write a vision that will inspire you to be healthy.  A vision that will lead your life guided by the Holy Spirit that lives within you and encouraged by those in your small group.  As a matter of fact, we want EVERYONE to be in a 217group throughout this whole 50 days of Live Differently.  How will you make the most of each Life Transformation Vision?

Be Honest – You can’t get to where you want to be until you have an accurate picture of where you are.  Take a snapshot of where you are and then move on. God wants us to grow and be connected to his vision for us.  (John 15)

Be Open- Never stop learning what God’s word says.  Be humble and yield to what God’s would say to you. Listening is a powerful too increase your health.  Immerse yourself in God’s Word and he will surprise you with a fresh vision and renewed calling.

Be Proactive- Take a risk and make something happen.  Start a habit, but whatever you do, be bold.  Our bold steps of faith will lead to health.  No one gets healthy by continuing to do what they are doing. (I think they call that “insanity”)

Spiritual health is not an option, its a requirement of those who want to follow Jesus

28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that (A)we may present everyone (B)mature in Christ. 29 For this (C)I toil, (D)struggling (E)with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.  Colossians 1:28-29

Live Differently – Easter 2012

Easter Sunday is quickly approaching and I can’t wait.  I love the Easter season.  The change of the weather, the energy and atmosphere of the church, a signal of new life and new beginnings.  Starting Easter Sunday, we have a 50 day season of spiritual emphasis like we have never had before at 217church.  After 2 years and 2 weeks of ministry, it is time to take it to the next level.  I wanted to take this time and share with you some of the details about the new “Live Differently” 50 Day Spiritual Emphasis.  Live Differently is all about transformation against the odds.  What will we be addressing?

Four Areas of Spiritual Health

#1 Spiritual Health Easter Sunday April 8th, we will be focusing on our spiritual health. Each Sunday during Live Differently you will hear this phrase – “Salvation is free but discipleship will cost you everything.”  On Easter we will be addressing the heart issue of following Christ.  What are the practices of a Christ follower? What does a healthy spiritual life look like? Heart transformation is the key and the habits of prayer, reading the word, studying scripture, and meditating on it all flow from a heart transformed.  The challenge will be to join a small group for SEVEN CONSECUTIVE WEEKS.  Taking this time to engage in a spiritually intensive season is going to sharpen us in our focus as individuals and a church.  If you want the most out of the series you have to be in a small group!

#2 Financial Health – For the next two weeks, April 15th & 22nd, we will deal with one of the most difficult issues, how we live a healthy financial Life.  How do we work, live, save, and give? Should debt be an option? How does God want me to give? God has some incredible things to say about what financial health looks like and we want to address some lies the culture has fed to us. How much debt can we pay off by the end of 2012 as a church?  Let’s find out!

#3 Physical Health April 29th & May 6th we will tackle our heart condition and how we treat our bodies.  For some of us, this will be a literal heart check.  There is no way around it, your body matters to God.  Did you know that heart disease kills more people every year than car accidents? God cares that we take care of our earthly shell and we will discover how nutrition, exercise and healthy living matter to God. How many pounds will we lose?  Will we choose to live healthy lives in 2012?  Let’s encourage each other!

#4 Family Health – The last two weeks, May 13th & 20th we will deal with the foundational structure of society, the family.  We will deal with marriage, parenting and single living and what God’s intention for the family is. How will our marriages be healthier? What if our relationship with our children exponentially improved?  God has to deal with our hearts first and there are some great direction in scripture that speaks directly to the health of the family.

Three Environments of Reinforcement

#1 Weekend Worship – You will not want to miss a weekend as every Sunday at 10:00am and 11:30am as we worship collectively together.  What does play-doh have to do with your marriage?  Come find out and you will see.

#2 Small Group Connection – We are asking each small group to meet for seven consecutive weeks and study the “Live Differently” material we have been working hard producing and publishing in house.  Each group will get a 7 lesson DVD video curriculum and each person a small group booklet that will help guide them along the way.  We have some fun times planned for your small group with some great ideas for growth.  We want EVERYONE who calls 217church home to be in a small group.  For this reason, we want to start 15 new groups.  Want to H.O.S.T. a group?  Here is what you need

  • H -Have a Heart for People We aren’t looking for professionals, but people will a love for people
  • O – Open up your Home/Apartment – We need place for these groups to meet!  we currently have 14 homes, but to get everyone in a group, we need at least 14 more!  Are you game?  e-mail dan@217church now!
  • S – Serve A Snack/Share A Meal Together – Food is an incredible way to build relationships!  I love eating with people.  Don’t worry, after your 1st meeting, you can involve everyone in your group in sharing the responsibility for this.
  • T- Turn on the DVD/Host a Discussion – The DVD will be easy to understand and the lesson will be full of questions to ask.  As a H.O.S.T., you just take people right through the discussion question and some veterans of small groups will be there to help you along the way with any questions you may have.

#3 Individual Journaling/Life Transformations – At the end of the 7 weeks you will have 4 vision statements for your life, rooted in scripture, God inspired, written by you, birthed out of heart change inspired by the Holy Spirit.  My prayer has always been for us to be a healthy church.  It begins with healthy people!  This process is something I personally have been doing for over 10 years and has helped me incredibly.  I can’t wait to introduce it to you.

Get ready!  God is about to do something pretty incredible in your life…

Easter…From Guilt to Forgiveness

I hate the feeling of guilt…

You know the feeling of getting caught, the unrest, the discontent.  I was approaching the intersection of highway 130 and 539 and I was late.  I looked to my right and no cars, so I slightly paused at the stop sign and bolted through the intersection.  You guessed it, I glanced in my rear view mirror and I saw the flashing lights and all the sudden a sinking feeling.  I was caught and had no excuse.  I was in a hurry.  I rolled down the window, produced the necessary paperwork and the question came, “Do you know why I pulled you over?”  “Yes,” I responded.  “I totally blew that stop sign and I’m sorry it was a mistake” (no crying, blubbering or pleading for mercy)  then the response.  “Are you a Marine?”  Suddenly there was hope!  “Yes I was sir from 1992-2000!”

“Thanks for serving your country, you know better! Stop at stop signs, I don’t want to have to clean up your body some day.  Stop signs are there for a reason, now get out of here…”

What? No ticket? No punishment!  Woo Hoo!!! I had been given a gift called grace and immediately the guilt was replaced with thankfulness and celebration.  I drove the rest of the way to work like an old granny and was totally pumped.

Guilt has been replaced with forgiveness, Jesus is alive, let’s celebrate this Easter 217church!  Hamilton amc24 10am.
