Why I Pick Up Pennies

You are valuable, but are you LIVING THAT VALUE?  I was walking down the street yesterday after a meeting in Princeton, and there it was nestled into the crack in the pavement, a poor, lonely, useless penny.  Little did this penny know that one of my strengths in the strengths finder is MAXIMIZER.  I was prepared to pull him out of the destiny of doom of being kicked down the street and back on track to his purpose in the monetary system.  Heck, I even saw a person watch me and snicker, because picking up a penny to the average person seems rather futile.  So, being taught by my grandfather well, because of the countless walks we went on as a kid together, I leaned over and picked it up.  CHa-CHing!  I remember he had a box for all his change he picked up.  He taught me every penny has #VALUE.

Just because you aren’t being used doesn’t mean you don’t have #value.

Pennies

“Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it?”       Luke 15:8

You Live your value when you live the #values Jesus laid out for you.  Everyone and every life has value.  You matter to God.  This is perhaps the biggest truth our church can leverage in order to reach our community with the love of Jesus and fulfill the great commission.  Me picking up pennies really isn’t about pennies, it’s about taking what other people disregard and putting it to use.  It’s a reminder, this is what the church is all about.

3 Things I Learn from Picking Up Pennies

1.  People Are Valuable –

Every coin has value.  You don’t have to agree with me, and I know about monetary inflation, but every penny counts, just like every life counts. Insignificant people were the very ones Jesus came to love.  Pennies have value, people have value, put them to use.   Principle: Every life has value

2.  Look For That Value –

Call me quirky, but picking up coins is something I have done for YEARS.  When I walk I typically look down.  I even have a habit of opening my door at drive through windows and looking down to see if there are any coins on the ground.  (I know I am sick)   Principle: Be disciplined in looking for value, you will find it in unexpected places.

3.  Put Things Back To Work For Their Original Purpose

This simply means back to the reason they were created for.  It’s obvious.  Too many people feel they have lost their value and are getting trampled on, kicked down the road.  This is probably because they don’t see themselves as valuable and no one has stopped to help them get back to their purpose.  Principle: Take time to help others.

So next time you see a penny, remember your value.  IF you see someone struggling to find their’s, pick them up and help them be put back to good use.

4 HUGE “What If’s” For Any Church

Football is ALMOST here.  I am totally excited because I love watching my TEAMS in action.  I love the strategy, possibility and anticipation of cheering for a winning team.  The excitement of being at a game, watching my favorite players, fantasy football, competition, and to top it all off, fall is my favorite time of the year.  The team works when EVERY PERSON PLAYS THEIR ROLE.  I have been on championship teams AND losing teams and I DO NOT LIKE LOSING, neither do you.  Here is the good news: When you join a church team, you have WON.  The idea of church is PURE GENIUS of God.  Jesus died for the church so we would serve it.

hands in 8-21-15

And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.”  Ephesians 4:11-12

Let me tell you about Frank and Annette, friends of mine at 217church.  I’ll never forget the day Frank introduced himself to me and described how you, the church, were so friendly to complete strangers, them.  You have accepted them and changed their life.  You have prayed for them in their sickness.  They love you so much, they moved back to New Jersey recently just to be a part of our church.   Now they are a part of the family.  Frank’s and Annette’s story is one of amazing transformation.  They found Jesus, forgiveness, a church family, and a place to serve and an eternal purpose.  You might meet them this Sunday at our Hamilton Campus.  It is so easy to forget the work we are doing in the church is ABSOLUTELY life altering.  On just ONE Sunday alone the possibility in our community is staggering.  When you the church, greet, set up equipment, play your instrument, run the sound or video, smile, hug, it ALL MATTERS.  There is no unimportant role on the church.

4 “What If’s” That Will Change Our Church

1.  What If…You Get in the Game – Do you serve on a regular basis?

Countless times I have watched people go from sideline spectators to valuable team members seemingly overnight.  We have people preparing to go to minister in prisons, people setting up equipment and signs on the weekend, working with children and youth, greeting people, working in the office organizing the church, counting offering, leading small groups, visiting those in the hospital, praying diligently for those in need, delivering food and clothes, counseling an engaged couple.  The list goes on and on.  You have a gift and it’s time to be used of God.

2.  What if…You Play Your Role Well – Are you in the right spot?

Let’s face it, there isn’t much worse than getting STUCK in some role that you really don’t like and really aren’t cut out for!  Maybe you are in a role and you need a change?  Or maybe the only change really needed is in your attitude?  Which of these gift sets best describes you?  Whichever one it is, use it for the building up of the church.  It’s time to maximize your contribution.  And one more thing, it’s ok if it takes some time to find the “perfect fit”  don’t ever give up!

  • Apostle:  Blazes new territory
  • Prophet: Tells God’s heart and the intent and future of the church
  • Evangelist: Gathers people for the sharing of the Gospel
  • Shepherd: Organizes structure of caring for people
  • Teacher: Makes plain the principles of the bible

3. What if…You Invite Others  When was the last time you asked someone to serve with you?

Serving alone makes no sense.  We have teams of people that do things, almost everything!  The next time you do any ministry, invite someone to come with you.  This is going to take some intentionality and forward thinking, but you can do it!  How many people are just waiting for a personal invitation to serve?  Lots I imagine.  A healthy team is attractive, you are that attractive force.  When they see you serving, it acts like a magnetic pull for people into the body of Christ, the church.

4. What if…You Forgive Others – Is it ok to disagree with you?

Do you work and play well with others?  You know what I mean.  Are you a “HM Christian?” (High Maintenance)  If it always has to be your way and you have to be the center of attention, and you have trouble forgiving, Now is the time to forgive.  I can almost guarantee you someone in our church will offend you at some time.  But let’s choose to forgive.

IF we do these things, the possibilities are limitless.  it’s up to you church.

This weekend we will renew our covenants as vision owners of 217church together.  235 baptisms later, we are still going strong.  The church will endure!

If You Have Regrets…

It’s never too late.  When I married and graduated college, I had a choice to make.  What type of life did I want to build?  It’s been a series of choices ever since for my wife and I.  Some decisions we have hit home runs, and some, well, we blew it. But I want to learn from my mistakes.  Got regrets?  Of course, who doesn’t?  But it’s time to build a life that teaches the Next Generation key building blocks by example.  Our hope is they will surpass anything we have been able to accomplish.

I made a decision from the age of twenty to Live Differently and build a life that was centered on Gospel ideas, and twenty years later, I am glad I made those choices.  Now I am committed to develop these building blocks in others.

blocks 10-13

“He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.”  Luke 6:48

Over these years I have watched people (including myself) make terrible mistakes in the following four areas.  I am convinced, if we can get control of the below areas, our lives will begin to look more like a disciple of Jesus.  These are benchmarks that will reflect a well built life!

Four Building Blocks of Life

1. Spiritual Fervor – Are you listening to the Spirit of God?

This week I was listening to a very thorough explanation of how Jesus left with us the Holy Spirit and how He still works.  I was reminded of how much we can ignore God in our every day life because of all the distractions that get in the way.  Sometimes the Spirit tells us to do something and we are a coward, and other times we just have too many other things in our life to listen to Him.  Every major decision in life needs to be made by listening to the voice of God.  This means, we pray, read the word, write our thoughts, take sabbath, and overall learn to be in harmony with the Holy Spirit.  Your life begins with a relationship with Jesus.  Your very life depends on the Holy Spirit!

2. Relational Cooperation – Do you forgive others and keep short accounts?

This starts with your spouse, kids, parents, brother, and sisters, your nuclear family, and extends to those you work and do life with.  Bitterness and un-forgiveness will ruin your life and destroy your soul.  We need to learn to forgive those we live and do life with.  No matter how much you have been hurt, it isn’t worth holding a grudge against anyone.  Jesus forgives and we are instructed to forgive.  It doesn’t mean we enable abuse and neglect, but we always seek the path to forgiveness.  Recently after preaching on forgiveness, a woman came up to me and told me God was telling her to go to her husband who cheated on her and tell him, “she forgives him.”  My jaw dropped and I told her, “listen to God and do it, we’re here for you!”  If you fail to have this block, your moral authority crumbles away and your credibility disappears.

3. Financial Integrity  Are you generous in giving?

Every Christ follower should be on the road to be what I call an “irrational giver.”  I believe this starts with giving away 10% of your income.  Not for legalism sake, but as a starting point of telling God you trust Him. When you give you emphasize He is the provider of all the resources.  We are simply managers.  I have referred to giving the first 10% as “training wheels.”  When we look FIRST at other’s needs and the advancement of the Kingdom of God, we become aligned with God’s purpose and he WILL USE US!  Selfishness and irresponsible financial management will lead to your ruin.  Our giving should be joyful, regular, and sacrificial.  Give, provide for your family, pay your taxes and always seek to ask, “how much should I give?”

4. Physical Disciplines – Are you intentional about how you treat your body?

Food, exercise, sleep and our mental health are spiritual issues.  Many people eat whatever they want, fall prey to addiction both substance and sexual, over work themselves, and fail to exercise.  This is a recipe for premature death and a toxic life.  Your body matters to God!  The bible says our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit.  This means we should be paying attention to taking care of our physical health.  It doesn’t mean you have to run a marathon and bench press 400 pounds, but it does mean you should ask God how He wants you to take care of the body he gave to you.

Build it smart, build it steady and it will stand.

It’s going to be an INCREDIBLE weekend!

Persevering Through Stress

The other night I was thinking about a couple of situations my family is facing and I couldn’t sleep.  What keeps you up at night?  Have you been there?  There is a common thread running through our western culture.  People are STRESSED OUT all the time.  Whether it’s finances, marriage, family, job, or moving, all of these cause mental, emotional and can even affect our physical health.  The sad thing is, even our children are stressed out!

You will get stressed!  But what should you do?

stress

My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.” Matthew 26:28

I lead a church and daily hear of and spend time with people who are at a crossroads in their lives.  Death, marriage, birth, moving, bankruptcy, moral failure, I have seen it all.  We can learn much from Jesus’ moments before he suffers crucifixion, one of the greatest physical and emotional stresses known.  Jesus understands your stress.

4 Things To Do When You Are Stressed –

#1 Separate Yourself – When stress hits it is often because I don’t see a pathway forward.  As Jesus was preparing to die, he knew he needed to get away.  Sometimes we are forced into solitude and other times we need to have the foresight and discipline to take a sabbatical and get away, FAST.  Jesus needed to feel the support and the love of His Father to have the strength to go forward.

#2 Pray – Maybe this one is common sense, but I am not talking about a casual prayer, I am talking about a desperate prayer.  One that calls out to God for deliverance and a miracle.  Call out to God, even if you don’t feel close to Him, even if you feel like He won’t listen.  If Jesus prayed and sweat drops of blood out of stress, well, maybe that is what it takes.

#3 Rely on Your Friends – When Jesus went to that Garden, He went with his friends, not alone.  He specifically asked them to watch.  Now, they failed him, but they needed to be present with him.  Have you ever thought what you are going through may be to help others gain courage?  The disciples learned a valuable lesson on that night.  I’m sure they never forgot those moments with Jesus.

#4 Follow Through – If you need courage, you need not to look further than Jesus on the cross.  Take the step, have the tough conversation, ask forgiveness, pay down the debt, believe God for your healing.  He is there with you.  Do it!

Jesus ultimately came to bring peace to all of this chaos.  Let this scripture resonate with you today…

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”  Matthew 11:28

Help, I Want To Pray More

Last month I was sitting on a hill staring out at one of the most beautiful lakes in the world in Africa, Lake Victoria.  I was praying for my family, our church ministry, the leaders, my marriage and overall wisdom in every decision.  Many times God calls you to make hard decisions, sometimes that are unpopular but rooted in the word. God teaches us different things in different seasons.  In this season, He is teaching me to depend on Him more through prayer.  We must have a rich prayer life, These are prayers I am praying for you…

Praying Hands 5-23-14

“The prayers of a righteous person are powerful and effective ” James 5:16

God is not done with you.  No matter what you face it is for a season.  But when all else fails, you can absolutely depend on God.  It’s time to pray.

Four Prayers I am Praying For You…

#1 Your Faith – Jesus takes convicts and turns them in to converts.  That is right, this is what we are all about, restoring people in their relationship with Jesus.  He came that we would have faith and that He would die and be the ultimate sacrifice so we would have eternal life and know and follow HIM.  RESTORED!  This is our word.  Jesus rose from the DEAD and while pointing to Jesus, My prayer is your belief and dependence would increase that you would be able to take your eyes off the worldly results, temptations and pride and call out in the heavenly reality.

#2 Your Finances  – What we invest in we value.  I have talked to so many people these last two weeks who are hurting financially.  When you can’t provide for your family there is uncertainty, fear, confusion and even insecurity.  We need to continue to pray for God’s provision for the people of our community.  Especially the elderly, the disabled, the widows and the single moms.  When we begin praying these prayers God will move us to realize that we are to be generous and help one another through difficult times.  I love being a part of a church and community that believes in taking care of those who are going through rough times.  We do this because it is an example of the Gospel of Jesus in action.  Giving is not about a legalistic percentage, but a heart that is transformed as a reflection of the Gospel. A FAMILY takes care of one another and advances the Gospel with its finances. My prayer is you would have enough to live but not so much that you would depend on your riches.

#3 Your Focus  Be more afraid of missing an opportunity than failing.  Distractions will derail your life.  Jesus and the Gospel are what matters.  We are to be pursuing Him as our FIRST priority.  We are to serve others and love them.  Who has Jesus sent you to?  Take your eyes off yourself and you will begin to gain the right focus. The church is at it’s best serving the community, loving people, taking care of one another, pursuing the common good, sharing meals together and speaking out as a peaceful voice of reason.  My prayer is you would focus on the right things.

#4 Favor of the People – We are HIS children – Let me say that again.  You have a seat at the table with Jesus and he calls you, “brother, sister and friend.”  I tell my children they bear my last name and they need to act like it!  When you realize whose family you are in and that the Father has lavished the greatest gift of love and favor on your life, it changes how you PRAY.  Through forgiveness of sins, repentance, privilege and honor to be called the church and a life in heaven with HIM, he has given us favor.  This changes our perspective.  We need to pray for the favor of God that he would be merciful and gracious, especially with those who don’t know Him yet.  My prayer is he would INCREASE HIS FAVOR upon you.

You refresh my heart and it is a privilege to pray for you.

4 Things Dads Must Do

I stepped off the plane and watched my 3 biological children meet our 3 new adopted children for the first time, and there was pure joy!  What an INCREDIBLE FATHER’S DAY GIFT!  Over the past three years we have been waiting, anticipating and looking forward to the culmination of a vision.  I will never forget watching all of our six children hug, smile, beam, and then laugh uncontrollably on the way home from the airport.  To all of you who prayed and supported in countless ways, you were with us.  Now I’m a father of SIX!  I am blessed, children are NOT a burden.  However, I woke up today feeling and realizing that alone, this is an insurmountable task and I better focus on what is important…

car kids

(My New Travel reality) “God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh over me.”  Genesis 21:6

I’ve learned you can’t be a dad on your own strength.  There are too many responsibilities, too much stress, not enough money, not enough time, too many problems, too many disagreements and it’s HARD to please everyone.  So with these four things, I am aiming to PLEASE GOD.  I MUST depend on God to help me be what he wants me to be.  Here is what I learned from Abraham, the Father of nations in Genesis 24:

4 Things DADS MUST DO:

#1 Laugh – If you haven’t taken the time lately to laugh at yourself, your children, and the pure miracle of God allowing you to be a father, it’s time to relax!  Over the last two months especially, every day there has been a laughable moment.  The things my children say, their interactions together, their fashion sense, (or lack there of) their quirky habits, they are AMAZING.  EVERY DAD should be laughing with pure joy because God has provided these children for these years for you to empower with joy.

#2 Declare – Your words are more powerful than you can possibly imagine.  I am learning every day to declare things for my children.  My role is NOT to be their critic but to be their catalyst.  Not to berate them, but to BLESS THEM.  They look at me with desire for approval.  I’m choosing to give that to them.  Here are a few practical ways to declare things for your children.

  • Prayer – Pray over your children.  Already after three months, my new children have adopted the prayer of approval from God for a STRONG BODY, a SHARP MIND and a BOLD SPIRIT.  One has to do with the way we treat our bodies, the next, the need for us to be wise and educated so we can bless others, and the third asks for help to live a life reflecting the Gospel in everything.
  • Affirming Words – I can’t even begin to count the times I have praised my children in the last few months with words like, “that is a great choice, thank you for saying your sorry, that was excellent, you are really good at coloring…etc, etc, etc.”  There isn’t any way you can over encourage your children.
  • Tell Others – Want to see your child absolutely beam?  Watch what happens when others share with your children your fatherly approval of them.  When they find out you have been bragging on them, it will last a lifetime.
  • Make a fool of Yourself – Embarrass yourself for them.  Be extravagant in declaring gifts, hug them when their friends will see it and it feels uncomfortable.  If you truly love, you will make a fool of yourself!

#3 Follow – Your talk has to line up with what you do!  I’m choosing to FOLLOW JESUS because he is worth following.  I want them to have a dad with character.  They will not do what you say, they will do what you do.  I was reminded of this two weeks ago.  Godfrey said, “Daddy, seatbelt!”  I had forgotten, he reminded me.  We are teaching them to wear seat belts and obviously, I need to model this behavior.  Everything is modeled:  Prayer, giving, speech, word selection, eating habits.  They want to be like you so give them a high standard to live by.

#4 Receive – Where is your strength coming from?  Learn not to be the provider, but to depend on Jesus.  Let him provide the mental and emotional strength.  Let Him give you humility to choose the right thing, to love your wife with EXTRAVAGANCE like Jesus loved the church.  Let Him reorganize your priorities to live a life designed with the correct priorities.  Feed yourself scripturally.  Discipline yourself in your mind and in your actions to be determined to please God.  It’s not your own strength, YOU MUST receive it from God.

3 Things Our Church MUST Do

I am still in Uganda but I’ll be back with you this Sunday!  We can’t wait!  This week, when I heard the news of the destructive fire that tore through 20 homes of Hamilton residents in the Bromley community, it broke my heart.  These are the people we have been called to serve.  When people are hurting is when the church is at it’s best.  As a church there are a few clear things we MUST do.  There is no doubt, these are the NON-NEGOTIABLES of the Christian walk. If you want to be the church, do these 3 things to hit the bullseye:

8175914

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind…you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”  Matthew 22:37-39

3 Things Our Church Must Do:

#1 Serve The World Relentlessly – This happens both across the street and around the world.  Every time we bring a meal to the hungry, take care of the widow, give someone a grocery card who just lost their job, clean up a neighborhood after a devastating storm, provide clothes, toiletries and blankets after a fire, take in a foster child who is abandoned, adopt a child who has no home, or provide clean water to villages in the Dominican Republic, JESUS IS PLEASED.  We are reflecting His love. The Good News: You are already doing ALL these things.  More Good News: We get to keep doing these things!

“Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”  James 1:27

#2 Care For One Another Deeply – As a church we are to take care of each other as brothers and sisters.  You have forgiven one another.  You have paid each others’ rent, prayed for and taken care of the sick, visited each other in the hospital, fixed cars, rebuilt houses, eaten thousands of meals together, shared in the joys of baptisms, weddings and milestones in each others’ lives, and done simple things like babysitting children so a marriage can be strengthened through a date night.  The best part, you asked for NOTHING in return from your church family.  You desired to LOVE.

“And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds, and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of the ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” Ephesians 4:11-12

#3 Pursue God Passionately – Our Role is to MAKE Disciples. The standards MUST BE raised as Christ followers to be HIS DISCIPLES.  Do you aspire and discipline yourself to pray and know JESUS, HIS GOSPEL, and word daily and follow it?  I’m talking about feeding yourself spiritually daily. Do you submit yourself to someone for accountability and growth regarding how you handle your purity, your possessions and your pride?  Do you love repentance and often admit you are wrong?  Are you ascribing to please God with EVERY area of your life?  Are you pursuing God with your marriage, time, parenting, leisure and habits?  There is no room for mediocrity and following Jesus half-heartedly. Our church must raise the standard.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added to you.”  Matthew 6:33

Sound like a lot of work? Think it will take a lot of time? Think it might cost a lot of money?  Exactly.  Maybe this is why Jesus went to the cross. His ultimate sacrifice involved death, blood, an act of pure love. He is the example and we do these things by HIS strength and leadership not our plans and power.

When we “love the Lord with all our heart, soul and mind, and love our neighbor as ourselves,” we become the church at it’s best.  This is the vision unleashed, because this is who we are.  Our preferences will fall away and our focus will be sharp and clear. This is what we MUST do, it’s time.

Measuring Success

A guest post by Matt Murphy

Recently, I have been working out at a CrossFit gym or box. It has been an incredible experience. I love the camaraderie that we have, the competition, and the results that it produces. I have never been stronger or more fit in my life. In our “box” as we call it, we measure everything. We measure how fast we do things, how many reps we do, and how heavy our weight is. We want to see measurable growth over time. It is important to do this in fitness so that you can focus on growing your fitness.

4192282

It is like this in many aspects of life. If I just go through the self-help aisle at Barnes and Noble I will find many books that will say, “5 steps to financial freedom” or “90 things to do in your first 90 days in a new job.” All of these type of things are measurable specific to an area of life you want to be successful. We are consumed in a world that is all about the bottom line. Because this is the world that we live in we naturally take this to our spiritual lives.

We think that to be successful in our spiritual life we have to do everything the Bible says and of course what our pastor says. We may not think of it this way but a lot of times we actually go to church look to for a list of things to do to make our spiritual live successful. Our American minds think that we will be a spiritual success if we attend church, take our children to church stuff, give a little money, give a little of our time, and pray once in a while…then we have made it spiritually. Well, sorry to say but none of that makes us successful spiritually. Jesus alone makes us a success. His version of success is so different than ours.

Let’s dive a bit deeper into this idea of success. If you read the Bible long enough you will find that much of the way God calls us to live is in direct contrast with what the world tells us. Let’s take a popular one in the American culture: retirement. A family that moves into retirement is deemed as a successful American family right? By the financial measure, they are successful. Here’s what Jesus says about that in Luke 12:

“And he said to them, Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for ones life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. And he told them a parable, saying, The land of a rich man produced plentifully, and he thought to himself, What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops? And he said, I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.”’ But God said to him, Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be? So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.

This is convicting isn’t it?  Those weren’t my words, they were Jesus’ words. If we are following Jesus we clearly have to redefine what retirement even means. We have to ask ourself the question about the money we are storing up and is this what God wants for me. It’s possible that He does want you to store it up for a future purpose. Maybe you have been given a job that you can make a lot of money so later you can give your time for His purposes and not need a salary. Or maybe He has given you gifts that you can make money your whole life to give for His purposes. Are you asking Him what His purpose for your life is?

When we look at how the Bible defines success for us there are never numerics involved. When numbers are involved in scripture they are always used to tell a story but never used to say this is what success looks like. In many cases those with the least amount are highlighted as most successful in stories. There are stories of great numbers that seem to indicate success. Scripture is clear that less and more can be seen as success. Let’s look at how Jesus talks about a successful life in the parable of the talents. One made 2 and one made 5. In our culture the one with 5 would be considered the more successful and get the raise, right?  But to both it is said, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.”  (Matthew 25:23 ESV) The Apostle Paul encourages Timothy in his 2nd letter to him:

Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself. (2 Timothy 2:3, 10-13 ESV)

Faithfulness is the key word used in scripture for success. Every time someone is highlighted as a success faithfulness is at the center. I define success as being faithful to God’s call. This can apply to every area of life; your fitness, job, marriage, kids, finances, ministry, and your spirituality. Do you know what God has called you to in every area of life? Are you being faithful to that call?

I’m 40 Today? What?

Age is just a number, but it does have me thinking. What is life all about? Birthdays with a “zero” cause us to contemplate all life is; Disappointments, regrets, thankfulness, opportunity, successes, everything. Here is one key question I am trying to live by everyday, regardless of how long I live. “What is the wise thing to do? Here is the greatest challenge you will ever face, having the mind of Christ in all situations. If you follow Jesus this verse is true for you “But we have the mind of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 2:16).  Many times the reason we get ourselves into difficult situations is because of our own poor choices. We think things through without God. But there is hope.

Life is not about how long you live, but how you live.

4 Words To Live By –

1.  Conviction – What do you stand for? Standing for the wrong thing won’t matter, but having the right convictions will lead you to powerful, meaningful years.

  • Learn to Trust Jesus in every situation – The Gospel is the principle that trumps every other driving force, desire or passion. His sacrifice and redemption has given me reason to trust.
  • Love my family well – I am in Uganda today celebrating my 40th birthday with the incredible gift of three new sons. I am torn, missing my 3 children in New Jersey, but I am making the choice to love my wife and these six children with everything in me. This is the most important legacy I will leave.
  • Serve the church – Offering my life to God for His purpose is pure joy. Using it to bring honor and glory to him is critical.

2.  Compassion – Who will you show mercy to today?  Showing compassion is a lifestyle. If you look for the opportunities, compassion will rise up within you. The more you want, the less compassion you tend to have. Ambition can squash out compassion. “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13). This is true compassion.

3. Character – What will you be known for?  Consistency over a lifetime of depending on God is what I am aiming for. “My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast. (Psalm 57:7) This is my prayer for my life.  Emotional decisions accentuate problems.  Wisdom gives clarity to your steps.

4. Challenge – “Do you depend on your comfort?”  Temporary suffering is nothing compared to your eternal glory. Don’t seek comfort, seek the will of God. Most of us tend towards comfort, but when God gives you the command to follow, your job is to simply obey, whatever the outcome.

Please pray that we can return home with our 3 sons soon.  I am missing you all and praying for you constantly. 40 is just a number, looking forward to the next 40!

Why Change is GOOD!

I know I just made some of you cringe with that title.  CHANGE IS HARD!  Each of us have a different tolerance and preference for change and at the same time, no matter what, changing things is difficult.  Sometimes change is a choice and sometimes change happens out of our control.  But no matter what the change, we must learn to see the broader picture of what God is doing.  As many of you know, Luke Fraser has transitioned out of his role as the Robbinsville campus pastor, this means more change for our church.  God is in the process of changing all of us and there is much to learn.

“Emerging from a change can be the most difficult thing we face in our lives”

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.. Hebrews 11:1

Whenever we face a critical change there are things we need to keep focused on.  Who God is, where He is, and believing he has our best in mind, to name three of them.  This will take an incredible amount of faith.  But trust me on this one, the change can be good.  Our staff talked about change this week in our weekly meeting, here is what we came up with.

5 Reasons Why Change is Hard and What to Do:

1. Fear of the Unknown – WE MUST TRUST THE LOVE OF GOD.  Many times we don’t need to have more answers, we need to have more trust.  Figuring everything out and making decisions to quickly after a change can cause us to panic even more.  Make decisions out of love not fear. “Perfect love drives our fear.” 1 John 4

2. Disappointment ANTICIPATE THE EXCITEMENT OF SOMETHING NEW.  When you get to rock bottom and disappointment turns into depression, you have to look forward and ask God for a new vision.  What is one new thing you think God wants to do through you?  Mourn the disappointment, have a season of grief, then believe.

3. Lack of Control – TOTALLY DEPEND ON GOD.  Control is an illusion.  The economy, your marriage, your house, your job, your family.  The reality is, we control nothing.  Our job is to let go of control and submit to the process that God has for us in the change.  This has happened several times in my life and as a matter of fact, is happening right now as I right this!

4. I’m Uncomfortable PRAY.  Maybe I should have put this one first on the list!  I have head this so many times, it is like a broken record, pray, then pray, then pray some more.  Start a new prayer habit and remember, take someone with you.  Have someone check in with you everyday and pray for you as you go through the change.

5. Doubt – SILENCE THE ENEMY.  You have to ban the voices from your head that would seek your destruction.  Doubt is the beginning of deadly pattern.  What you take into your mind can corrupt your soul.  Choose not to listen to what the enemy would say about you and lean on who Jesus says you are.

I know it is difficult, I know it isn’t what you thought it would be, it’s time to increase your faith and trust God simply for today.  He has your tomorrow. emerge from where God has you!
